Moulthrop Generations: Turned Wood Bowls by Ed, Philip, and Matt Moulthrop

Organized by the ASU Art Museum, "Moulthrop Generations: Turned Wood Vessels by Ed, Philip, and Matt Moulthrop" presents more than 70 turned wood vessels created between 1979 and today. The Moulthrops are a dynasty of artists – grandfather, son, and grandson – who have made significant contributions to the field of wood turning and share a consistency of vision and process.

Mitchell Park Domes renovations

The domes are getting a facelift! The roof and ceiling in the lobby will be replaced; new lighting is being added and cracked glass will be replaced in the domes. The domes will be closed during these renovations.

The exhibit is designed around the innovative and creative spirit of Wisconsin native Les Paul. The House of Sound features dozens of priceless and historical items from Les Paul’s personal collection – many never before seen in public. The House of Sound is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Rituals & Meditations: Works by Richard Bolingbroke & Imari Bowls

Inspired by his trips to Asia, Richard Bolingbroke has focused his artistic efforts on still life. His beautiful use of color, orchids and kimonos create works that inspire the imagination. Square and round bowls anchor the fluid blooming flowers that he uses. Uniting the flowers and objects creates a sense of, what the artist calls, “a pulsating tension of opposites.” The complexities of the paintings reflect the complexities of life. The rich reds, blues and golds of the Villa Terrace Imari Bowls collection are a colorful complement to Bolingbroke’s work.

Biographical Landscape:

Biographical Landscape offers an opportunity to revisit the works of Stephen Shore, one of the most prominent and influential American photographers to emerge in the last half-century. Focusing on Uncommon Places, Shore’s essential series on the American vernacular landscape produced between 1973 and 1982, Biographical Landscape provides an opportunity to reexamine this work in the context of his broader oeuvre, unearthing the conceptual underpinnings that inform his work throughout. What makes this work transcend the ordinariness of the subject matter is Shore’s unsurpassed artistry and technical skill as a photographer, coupled with his unique vision of each location that he documents. Quintessentially American scenes are transformed into uncommon places that seem frozen in space and time. The viewer of a Shore photograph is seduced by the colors, the density of information, and the everyday familiarity of the locations. The opening on July 24th will feature a talk by the artist beginning at 6p.m. Aperture, a not-for-profit organization devoted to photography and the visual arts, has organized this traveling exhibition and produced the accompanying publications.

A Focus on Figures

A Focus on Figures, an exhibition highlighting the figural bronzes in the Man at Work Collection, features the larger-than-life bronze figures on the Museum roofline and sculpture garden. Based on figures from the collection, 12 nine-foot-tall bronzes were reproduced in the Philippines to adorn the perimeter of the roof-top garden with five six-foot bronzes placed within the garden. An additional bronze, Sturgeon Fisherman, originally commissioned by Smith Brothers Restaurant in Port Washington, Wis., was also reproduced for the garden. The original sculptures will be exhibited alongside their mammoth reproductions at rooftop level.

Kees Van Dongen

28 rare art deco color pochoir prints by the famous dutch fauve artist, Kees Van Dongen. This exhibition celebrates the Kees Van Dongen retrospective opening at the National Museum of Monaco in Monte Carlo this summer to which the David Barnett Gallery is a lender.

"Arline Fisch: Creatures from the Deep"

The Racine Art Museum has commissioned internationally acclaimed jewelry artist Arline Fisch to create a new exhibition for its Windows on Fifth Gallery. The exhibition, "Arline Fisch: Creatures from the Deep", will be a shimmering street-side aquarium of jellyfish sculptures. Bringing her work to a grand scale, RAM’s Windows will showcase Arline’s use of knitting and crocheting techniques to create these larger-than-life sea creatures made of wire.

At a Moment's Notice: Photographs by John Heymann

Using black and white photography, John Heymann shows the contrasts of light and shadow in space and emphasizes spatial relationships between objects by joining the spontaneity of photojournalism with the aesthetics of fine art. The results are unexpected designs and forms of nature and landscapes that show how our environment is always changing.

Unmasked and Anonymous: Shimon & Lindemann Consider Portraiture

Manitowoc artists John Shimon & Julie Lindemann have made a career of conflating the contemporary with the historical. In the portraits that form the bulk of their oeuvre, the subjects are people who pass through their lives as small town residents, artists, and teachers and that seem somehow familiar. For the exhibition, the artists collaborated with Milwaukee Art Museum associate curator of photographs, Lisa Hostetler, to select approximately 50 portraits from the Museum’s photographs collection, along with an equal number of their own portraits. A catalogue accompanies the exhibition with essays by J. Shimon & J. Lindemann and Lisa Hostetler.

The gifts include large groups of ceramic sculptures, contemporary baskets, teapots in glass and ceramics, jewelry, textiles, prints, drawings and photographs.
